Match report: Thorncliffe cc v Coal Aston cc, Sat 6th September – from the Crucible Oval
After heavy rain and then drizzle, both teams, the umpires and groundsman Jakob Burgin did well to start and complete the match at the Crucible Oval.
Having lost the toss Thorncliffe were asked to defend first and on a testing track they lost early wickets in a must win match.
The promotion seekers were struggling at 30 for 3, but then in came in form pair Mike Alexander and Mikey Denton who in the previous match at Thorpe had smashed the ball to all parts. They went on to take a bowling attack apart for the second weekend running, with Alexander (who hit 106 at Thorpe) smashing 114 not out off 80 balls and Denton 50. Thorncliffe amassing a massive 240 off 35 overs.
The TCC men then set to work on the Coal Aston batsmen, with Alexander again being the pick of the bowlers taking 5 wickets for 6 runs off 10 overs, (the dynamic duo also working together again with a brilliant stumping by Denton off Alexanders bowling) and Jack Hulley taking 2 for 10 off 5. Coal Aston were 9 down at the close and Thorncliffe gained the 5 point win that confirmed their promotion to division 2, as Treetons match v Frecheville was called off for rain.
This was a well deserved promotion for captain Andrew Wood and his men in and up and down season that finished with 9 wins on the bounce.
