Crucible Community Fun Day 2015

On Sunday 30th August we hosted our first ever Community Fun Day which was held at Thorncliffe Cricket Club in Chapeltown.

We decided to organise the event at the end of June after a meeting at the Cricket Club, so we had just 9 weeks to pull this off. From deciding on a nominated charity, booking the live bands that were to perform, the PA system, staging, risk assessments, catering arrangements, to sorting a whole host of fun and games for the kids, this was going to be no mean feat.

There was one thing we were unable to control . . . . the weather!! The week before the event was tense. We checked the forecast on a daily basis and as typical of British conditions the forecast changed each and every time we looked. From sun, to rain, to wind we had it all. It got to a stage where we just gave up checking!

The day arrived and thankfully conditions were good. The sun was trying to break out, a few clouds in the sky but no wind. We were off to a good start!

At 10am the Cricket Ground (approximately 100m x 100m) was empty. By midday when the doors opened we had a host of games and activities for all the family to enjoy. From a 45ft inflatable assault course, bouncy castles, penalty shoot-out, coconut shy, golf competition, bowling game, beat the buzzer, high striker, as well as numerous cricketing activities there really was something for everyone of all ages to enjoy.

Prizes were given for many of the games including SWFC and SUFC tickets, Yorkshire Cricket Club Tickets, ICE Sheffield tickets, Tankersley Manor and Tinsley Golf Club vouchers as well as plenty of sweets for the kids to enjoy for taking part. All of the prizes were generously donated.

Catering was supplied by Thorncliffe Cricket Club who ran a brilliant BBQ. We also had ‘Fancy an Indian’ who have converted an ice cream van into a little haven serving delicious fresh Indian food. There was a bar (The Ranch) who worked incredibly hard in keeping every refreshed! We have since found out that by 5pm The Ranch had beaten their previous record takings, and by 10pm they had doubled their previous best total.

The businesses in Chapeltown also really got involved in the community spirit of the day. We had 15 local companies attend and have a stall at the event. It gave each of them a great opportunity to promote their business and the products or services they offer, but each and every one of the businesses also raised money for our nominated charity Bluebell Wood. From a tombola, guess the bear, rowing competition, football speed game to balloon drag car racing they really got involved and it was fantastic to have their support on the day.

Music was played throughout the day by The Ranch’s resident DJ and at 5pm the live music started. Malarkey Affair, The Two of Us, Helena Bland and DB5 all performed fantastic sets and got the crowd involved up and dancing. There really was something to cater for everyone’s musical taste!

The event wouldn’t have been possible without the support of people giving up their time to help before, during and after the Fun Day. It really did showcase what fantastic community spirit there is in Chapeltown. Also to everyone who attended and took part, your support helped us raise a great amount of money for Bluebell Wood. Thank you.

Same again next year which will be even bigger and better!
